The Knights Templar were a powerful and secretive brotherhood of Christian soldiers formed during the Crusades in order to protect pilgrims to the Holy Land, as well asthe Kingdom of Jerusalem itself. They were later persecuted by the Pope and the Church which led to the survivors going underground in further secrecy.
